Scaling & root planing

Unfortunately, many adults will experience some level of gum disease throughout their life, from mild gingivitis to severe periodontal disease. One of the first treatments that our dentists may recommend if you have periodontal disease is scaling and root planing. This procedure removes plaque and tartar beneath your gums to encourage reattachment of the gum tissue and proper healing

Risk factors

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and occurs when bacterial toxins are retained under the gum margins, leading to chronic inflammation and loss of the supporting tissues. Poor oral hygiene is the biggest contributor to the development of periodontal disease, however other factors can also increase your risk and severity of disease, including smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, pregnancy, aging and stress.

What to expect

Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease is key to halting and stablising the condition and preventing significant and costly dental treatment in the future. If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, our dentists will help to develop a tailored preventive program for you. This starts with guidance on how to improve oral hygiene and diet at home and is supplemented with several professional “deep cleaning” sessions based on your needs
